In 2026, we commemorate 250 years of America’s Armor and Cavalry legacy. The U.S. Army Armor Branch traces its origins to the Cavalry, whose official branch birthday is recognized as 12 December 1776, when the Continental Congress authorized the raising of cavalry forces. This legacy continued with the organization of the United States Regiment of Dragoons in 1833, the first mounted unit in continuous service; the formation of the Tank Service on 5 March 1918; the establishment of the Armored Force on 10 July 1940; and the designation of Armor as a permanent U.S. Army branch in 1950. Together, these milestones tell a story of continuity, adaptation, and enduring service.
