The Giving Bowl began in 2017 when 10-year-old CJ Matthews realized many kids he knew weren’t eating regularly when school wasn’t in session. His compassion came from lived experience—there was a time when his own family sought the help of a food pantry, and he knew firsthand the fear of not having enough food at home. He decided no child should feel that way, and he turned his love of football into a way to fight hunger.

What started as a small community game became a meaningful youth-led tradition. Today, The Giving Bowl is a brother-led initiative. CJ, now 18, helps with planning and leads youth volunteers, while his younger brother, Kollin—who was just 2 when it began—now plays in the event and helps deliver impact. Together, they’ve mobilized more than 3,000 youth to serve their community through The Giving Bowl.

Each winter, The Giving Bowl provides:

    •    Food and grocery support for families facing hunger

    •    Blankets and warm essentials for kids

    •    Toys for Tots distribution

The event pairs with Blankies 4 My Buddies’ Back-to-School Kickoff, every summer, which equips children with supplies, shoes, snacks, and hygiene items.

Nearly 300,000 Georgia children face food insecurity every year. For many families, resources are still stretched thin—even with SNAP benefits returning—making the Giving Bowl’s support critical.

CJ and Kollin are both Giving Tuesday Spark Leaders, inspiring youth nationwide to lead with kindness. CJ will be out of town on Giving Tuesday, receiving national recognition for The Giving Bowl, so your support is crucial.

Your Giving Tuesday gift directly powers the December 6 event—feeding families, warming children, and bringing hope to Georgia communities.

The Giving Bowl is more than a game.

It’s youth leading change.

It’s families helping families.

And it’s a reminder that compassion can start with one child who knows what it feels like to need help.

From Giving Tuesday to The Giving Bowl, Georgia, we need your help!
