Honoring 250 Years of Armor and Cavalry Heritage
In 2026, we mark 250 years of America’s Armor and Cavalry legacy—a lineage defined by mobility, shock, and decisive leadership in defense of the nation.
Today’s U.S. Army Armor Branch traces its origins to the Cavalry, with its official branch birthday recognized as 12 December 1776. That legacy began when the Continental Congress authorized the raising of cavalry forces on 12 December 1775. From those beginnings:
- The United States Regiment of Dragoons was organized in 1833, becoming the first mounted unit in continuous service
- The Tank Service was formed on 5 March 1918
- The Armored Force was established on 10 July 1940
- The Armor Branch became a permanent branch of the U.S. Army in 1950
This is a story of continuity—of Cavalry transformed, not replaced.
WHY YOUR SUPPORT MATTERS
The National Armor and Cavalry Heritage Foundation is the steward of a legacy that cannot be replaced once lost. Artifacts do not preserve themselves. Stories do not survive on their own. Heritage endures only when it is intentionally protected. Your gift helps make it possible to: Preserve and restore historic Armor and Cavalry artifacts; Expand and enhance the U.S. Army Armor & Cavalry Collection; Interpret this history for soldiers, families, and the public; Honor generations who served as America’s mounted warriors
THE 250 FOR 250 CAMPAIGN
We are calling on 250 supporters to give $250 or more in 2026—a tangible way to honor 250 years of mounted warfare heritage. Whether through: A one-time contribution, a recurring commitment or a legacy gift, your investment directly safeguards this history for future generations.
