Special thanks to Bill and Gale Schwanebeck, owners of Southern Lighting for Lighting a Home with a $1,000 gift this Holiday Season for a family in need of affordable housing!

Hi friend!

Over the years, we have witnessed families and volunteers swap smiles and stories, connect across cultures and languages, and make both memories and an impact, all while working together to build homes and hope.   Since 1991,  Houston County Habitat for Humanity has partnered with nearly 700 low-income people in our local community and 46 families internationally, helping them build or improve a place they can call home.

Working alongside volunteers, Habitat homeowners put in hundreds of “sweat equity” hours as they help build their own homes. Homeowners then purchase their home and pay an affordable zero-interest mortgage. The self-empowerment created by this opportunity helps homeowner families eliminate barriers to a better, healthier, more financially stable life. We believe that no one lives in dignity until everyone can live in dignity.

Please, will you help?
Houston County Habitat has the capacity to build 3 houses per year.
Our last homeowner information meeting resulted in 100 applicants.  This leaves 97 people without a solution.  Many of the families in our current pipeline represent the front-line workers who are fulfilling essential duties in at-risk industries during this crisis. These are the individuals bagging groceries, delivering packages, preparing food, and working in hospitals. Your gift will directly support these families working hard toward their homeownership opportunities.

The scope and impact of COVID-19 are unprecedented. It has led to a near halt of the U.S. economy, with over 20 million people losing their jobs, and the impact will be felt throughout the economy for months and years to come. While not immediately obvious to some, the pandemic’s effect on housing will be significant and lasting. Based on history, it’s likely that the negative effects will be disproportionately borne by vulnerable communities and low-income individuals. As the economic shocks from this crisis ripple out, these families will be hit hardest. They always are.

The need doesn’t go away just because the economy has stalled. In fact, the need is growing.

  • Over 500,000 Americans are homeless.
  • Forty percent of renters are considered cost-burdened.
  • Nearly 6 million Americans live in substandard housing.
  • In an estimated 12 million of these households, at least one contributing member works in an at-risk industry.

Our Fulfillment

This year, thanks to kind individuals like you,  we had the honor of building four houses, including two homes for deserving military veterans within our Veterans Build program.

Today, we're building for families like Chimere.  As a child growing up, she and her family moved 19 times by the time she was age 17.  Now as an adult, this hard-working single mom is determined to give her children the security and stability she did not experience as a child. Her eldest son Chad is pursuing a career in agriculture and wants to be a farmer one day.  The younger son Kyle is passionate about photography and sports.

Now, more than ever during this pandemic, your help is welcomed.

Will you act now to make a difference for your neighbor, friend, or family member who may be struggling during these difficult times?  Your gift will directly help us purchase building materials.

Become a monthly giver and you receive a special thank you gift from us.  Monthly giving helps us plan for the future and keep our program sustained.

Thank you in advance for being a champion of our cause and advocating for the greater good in our communities!
