Why is Habitat Women Build important?
Habitat Women Build events empower women to make a positive difference within our community. Women have been disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, from job loss to evictions and foreclosures. According to The National Women’s Law Center, 80 percent of U.S. jobs lost during the COVID-19 pandemic were held by women. The United Nations (UN) has reported that 40 percent of all employed women globally work in the industries hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic.
If we have learned anything during the past year it is how important safe and affordable housing is. Our homes have become workspaces, classrooms, gyms and so much more. Every person deserves safe and affordable housing. That is exactly what Habitat strives to do...every single day!
So many mothers work hard to advocate for their children, whether it be during the school day or at home. Whatever is needed they figure out a way to meet the needs of her children. 400 Houston County students were reported homeless in 2019. We can only imagine these numbers have significantly increased since COVID-19.
CELEBRATING 30 YEARS OF SERVICE!
Building since October 1991, Houston County Habitat is celebrating its 30-year history! They partner with low-income families to build decent affordable houses. They built 63 homes in Houston County and served more than 1000 people in our community. Using donations to purchase materials, volunteers build the homes then Houston County Habitat sells the home for the cost of the materials and finances it with a no-interest mortgage.
