STEM Gems

STEM Gems is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to building a stronger, more inclusive STEM pipeline by empowering girls and young women of all backgrounds to explore, pursue, and excel in STEM. Our mission comes to life through hands-on learning, mentorship, and exposure to diverse careers and inspiring role models. By equipping students with skills, support, and opportunities, we help them envision their futures and take tangible steps toward becoming the next generation of innovators, researchers, creators, and problem solvers.

At STEM Gems, we believe that every girl deserves access to a robust STEM education and can confidently see herself as a scientist, engineer, or mathematician, using her talents to make the world a better place. Through our programs—the STEM Gems Club, Summit, and Summer Camp—girls make meaningful connections to real-world STEM applications, reflect on their own strengths and interests, and develop the mindset and skills needed to pursue high-growth, high-impact STEM careers.

STEM Gems was founded by engineer Stephanie Espy, who spent years being one of few women and people of color in her academic and professional spaces. Stephanie’s experience reflects national data: today, women make up about 35% of the U.S. STEM workforce, and Black women make up about 2% of the workforce. Early exposure is critical. While many girls demonstrate high aptitude for STEM, they often lack the exposure, mentorship, and representation needed to translate that potential into action. According to a 2024 report by YouScience, girls consistently score high on STEM aptitude assessments but report lower interest in STEM careers due to the “exposure gap.” STEM Gems is designed to close that gap and change the narrative.

At the heart of our work are our pipeline programs that are centered around the STEM Gems book, “STEM Gems: How 44 Women Shine in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, and How You Can Too!” Our programs provide engagement throughout the school year and summer break.

By equipping girls with STEM skills, career awareness, role models, and confidence, STEM Gems helps them build pathways to success. Through our programs, we ensure that every girl-regardless zip code-sees herself as a future leader, innovator, and change-maker in STEM.
