Blue Heron Nature Preserve

A nonprofit organization

Blue Heron Nature Preserve inspires children, teens, adults, and seniors year-round as an oasis of innovative conservation projects, environmental education programs, and nature-inspired arts initiatives in an urban environment.

Local art educator, Nancy Jones, planted the seeds for the Preserve in 2000. Concerned for the loss of greenspace in her neighborhood, she worked with civic leaders and the City of Atlanta to establish the first 7-acres of this nature preserve and the eponymous nonprofit organization for managing this site.

In subsequent years, Blue Heron has expanded into 30-acres of picturesque woodlands, wetlands, riparian creek areas, and meadows, accessed by the 3-mile, earth-friendly Blueway Trail. Our commitment to foster environmental knowledge and stewardship at the Preserve and beyond in diverse communities has blossomed with this growth.

We lead year-round environmental educational programs in schools across Atlanta. Conservation projects in our four ecosystems have benefited municipalities in the Southeastern United States. Art exhibitions at the Preserve grow in popularity by art lovers and interest by artists from the metropolitan Atlanta area and East Coast.

Blue Heron sits on 30-acres of precious greenspace, yet our love for nature, desire to conserve this land, and dedication to nurture future generations of nature enthusiasts is boundless.
