Since 1972, Lutheran Towers has filled a critical need in Atlanta, Georgia, and continues to be a leader in the low-income senior housing community paving the way for other organizations to follow in its footsteps. Our mission is to provide a safe, quality, affordable home with person-centered supportive services that empower our residents to thrive as they age.
Lutheran Towers provides not just a roof over our seniors' heads but a warm and nurturing environment that fosters a sense of belonging and well-being. In 2022, the Department of Human Services awarded Lutheran Towers the “Senior Hunger Rising Star Award”. We continued to expand our efforts to enhance our residents' quality of life through a variety of programs and services, and in 2023 received the “Senior Hunger Leader Award” from the Department of Human Services.
Our residents come from many different backgrounds, with a mix of nationalities, ethnicities, religions, and educational and work backgrounds. Most residents are single, and two-thirds are women. However, the one thing they all have in common is that they possess an extremely limited fixed income, with an average income of $825 a month. This financial strain makes it difficult for them to afford basic needs.
Food insecurity is one of the top issues seniors across our country, and state, experience. In Georgia, more than one in ten seniors is unsure where their next meal will come from. 98% of Lutheran Towers’ residents face some level of food insecurity. Despite our free food programs, including the nation’s first-ever in-building free grocery store, the struggle to secure enough nutritious food remains a daily challenge for many.
Our organization fills these gaps by offering more than just a roof over our residents' heads. We strive to fulfill the 8 dimensions of wellness for our residents through our programs and services. This includes social and recreational activities, transportation services, and mental health support, all aimed at empowering seniors to thrive as they age.
By addressing these pressing needs, Lutheran Towers helps prevent homelessness, supports independence, and fosters a nurturing community for seniors who otherwise might be isolated and struggling. Our comprehensive approach ensures that our more than 200 residents have the resources and support necessary to live with dignity and comfort.
