Visit STMA to view our current exhibition Steffen Thomas: Exploring His Brotherhood Credo, on display until March 30, 2026.
In 1962, Steffen carved these words on a granite wall at his studio in Stone Mountain, GA: This world is too small for less than Brotherhood, too dangerous for less than Truth. To him, “brotherhood” meant all humankind, and he believed that humanity and equality should be at the forefront of a society. This credo of Steffen’s serves as a guiding principle for STMA and the work we do.
STMA holds a veritable smorgasbord of materials that explore Steffen’s philosophy of the Brotherhood of Man (Humanity) from major paintings and sculptures, to hundreds of sketches and writings. Steffen’s Brotherhood works are exhibited frequently at STMA and have been included in exhibitions in other museums and galleries, while others have been stored in archival boxes for years. This exhibition offers an exciting opportunity to unearth rarely seen works and writings and to share Steffen’s thoughts and ideas.
Make plans to attend REIMAGINE: Contemporary Georgia Artists, a traveling exhibition of art from the State of Georgia Art Collection, organized by the Georgia Council for the Arts. STMA is presenting this exhibition in collaboration with the Madison Artists Guild, Southern Heartland Gallery Guild (Covington), and The Artisans Village Artists Guild (Eatonton) April 19-May 29, 2026.
