Should Wait for a Meal

As we gather around the table this holiday season, it’s important to remember that many of our older neighbors are struggling to put food on the table.

As we make our own plans for the holiday season, it's easy to forget that 1 in 5 of our older neighbors is at risk for hunger. This year, that need is greater than ever. Beginning November 1, many of the older neighbors that we serve are facing a pause in their SNAP benefits due to the ongoing federal funding shutdown. At the same time, Meals on Wheels and other critical support programs are in limbo. For those living on fixed incomes already stretched by rising costs, these disruptions mean even harder choices between food, medicine, and heat.

That’s why the Athens Community Council on Aging, Campus Kitchen at UGA, and Epting Events are teaming up once again for Turkeypalooza 2025—a 10-day community effort to ensure no senior in Athens-Clarke County goes hungry this Thanksgiving or beyond.

Our goal is bold: $40,000 to provide

• 276 turkeys with grocery bags of fresh produce and holiday sides,
• 123 plated Thanksgiving meals for seniors who can’t cook for themselves, and
• 1,227 total meals to older adults and their families across our community.
• Critical year-round hunger relief for those facing rising costs and funding delays.

But Turkeypalooza is about more than a meal. It’s about dignity, connection, and care that last all year long.

Every year, even before the first meals leave our doors, the line of cars outside ACCA stretches down the street—filled with seniors waiting for a Thanksgiving meal. It’s a powerful reminder of the tremendous need in our community and the hope that compassion brings to the table. Your donation ensures that older adults continue to receive not only nourishment, but the love and belonging they deserve.
