Why does this matter?

Women veterans are the fastest-growing group among those who have served in the United States military. They currently make up around 9% of all veterans, a number that will continue to rise over the next decade. Behind those statistics are women who have given years of service, often in demanding and dangerous conditions. They return home carrying pride in their service, but many also carry invisible wounds of trauma, loss, and isolation.

The challenges these women face are deeply serious. Studies from the Department of Veterans Affairs show that women veterans are almost twice as likely to die by suicide as civilian women. In the past few years, that number has risen sharply. From 2020 to 2021, suicide among female veterans increased by more than 24% which is 4 time's the increase seen in male veterans. These are not just numbers, these are lives. These women are mothers, daughters, sisters, and friends who have served our country and deserve far better support when they come home.

Many women veterans feel overlooked by the systems designed to help them. Most veteran spaces are still dominated by men, and many women struggle to find safe, understanding places to heal. They often face unique challenges such as military sexual trauma, difficulties with transition, and feelings of being unseen or unheard.

Her Strength is Pope’s Museum’s NEW monthly art program for women veterans. Through this program, veterans gather to explore art, express themselves, and connect with peers who understand their experiences guided by a professional Arts Therapist. Art becomes a tool for healing, reflection, and community. While we are just beginning with this monthly program, our long-term vision is to grow Her Strength into a larger retreat-style program with tiny homes where women veterans can find a safe and restorative space to heal, create, and connect.

Participation in the 5K will directly support Her Strength and help us expand this program. Funds raised will provide materials, art supplies, and resources for the monthly workshops and allow more women veterans to participate. Every registration, donation, and show of support helps us build a foundation for this program and bring our vision of a larger retreat closer to reality.

Picture a woman veteran at a table covered in paints and brushes, exploring her creativity, sharing a story, and feeling seen and understood by her peers. That is the impact your participation can have. Every step you take on March 14th helps create a space where women who have served can heal, grow, and thrive.

Bring your friends, family, and community spirit. Together we can honor those who served, nurture their healing through art, and build a lasting foundation for Her Strength to grow and thrive in the years ahead.
