Help Preserve the First Tank into Baghdad

For more than two decades, one historic American tank sat weathered, forgotten, and nearly lost to history. Today, after years of effort, the legendary M1A1 Abrams “ANSWER TO THIS” has finally arrived at the U.S. Army Armor & Cavalry Collection restoration facility—but the mission to preserve it has only just begun.

On 5 April 2003, during the opening days of Operation Iraqi Freedom, this tank became the first American tank to enter Baghdad during the famous “Thunder Run.” Leading the charge with Task Force 1-64 Armor of the 3rd Infantry Division, “ANSWER TO THIS” helped spearhead one of the most decisive armored assaults in modern military history.

Now, this combat-worn Abrams stands as a direct link to the Soldiers who fought in Iraq and the generations of American Tankers who answered the nation’s call. Its scars, faded markings, and battle damage tell a story of courage, sacrifice, and victory that must never be forgotten.

After seventeen years of setbacks, transfers, and near loss to foreign sales programs, the tank has finally been saved. But restoring this historic vehicle to its 2003 combat appearance requires significant work:

Preserving original combat damage and markings

• Recreating the distinctive theater-made storage racks 
• Restoring authentic invasion-era paint and stenciling 
• Equipping the tank with historically accurate gear and crew equipment 
• Preparing the vehicle for permanent public display 

When complete, “ANSWER TO THIS” will become the only preserved U.S. Army Iraq War M1A1 Abrams on public display, ensuring future Soldiers and Americans can experience this history firsthand.
