Here's the TRUTH!

Eleven (11) Metro Atlanta Public Schools currently have over 2,200 students and 41 staff members participating in The Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) program. JROTC offers middle and high school students the opportunity to enroll in a leadership/citizenship program coordinated under the umbrella of the Career, Technical and Agricultural Education Division of the Georgia Department of Education.

Unfortunately, the Brigade Leadership believes there is a failure to communicate effectively!

Why?

Because their current communication channels and limited social activities do not effectively increase their ability to build battalion and brigade camaraderie, teamwork and effective leadership skills.

So, for 2020 and beyond, the student-led Brigade Leadership Staff took the initiative and played The Community On Demand STEAM Education & Life Skills Development Game to design a long-term communications & engagement strategy (impact solution) that can be carried forward by incoming cadets across all 11 Metro Atlanta Middle & High School JROTC Battalions.

. . . and here's how they did it!

STEP 1. Individual Teams Game Play (00:30)

Student leaders were paired up (2 per team) and dealt seven cards each.  Using only the resources in their hand, each team must develop a solution that addresses the need for an effective communications system for their brigade and then pitch their ideas to the group.

Time: 10 minutes

STEP 2. Collaborative Team Game Play (02:07)

After the first pitch round, students discussed the strengths of each team’s ideas and discover that there’s greater strength in working together.  Students decided to collaborate by combining each team’s resources in order to develop one cohesive strategy.

Time: 10 minutes

What Is Community On Demand?

Community On Demand is a STEAM Education & Life Skills Development Game created by U.S. Army Veteran & Strategist, Dana Jewel Harris. As Founder & Executive Director of The NEXT Steps Youth Entrepreneur Program, she designed Community On Demand based off the best practices of her 4-acre farm called Atwood Community Gardens so that it would:

  • Prepare learners for post-secondary education and the workforce through internships, apprenticeships and service-learning projects that benefit their communities
  • Allow learners to master content sharing and use of their STEAM skills at their own speed
  • Provide real world learning experiences that teach basic skills and technical skills simultaneously
  • Build up the qualifications and employable STEAM skills that employers need
  • Strengthen STEAM Skills through integrated and interactive instruction (applied learning)

Why Is This Important?

Because Community On Demand can help learners:

  • Move along a career pathway or up a career ladder to different and possibly higher-paying jobs
  • Better explain the impact and results that STEAM skills can produce
  • Develop visual literacy and overall critical thinking skills for lifelong learning
  • Represent a diverse range of specific abilities and accomplishments
  • Provide the best way to communicate the skills and knowledge obtained through experiences to employers
