Many refugees and children born to refugees struggle to make it in school. Children who migrate to the United States as refugees often lack the early learning foundations that are critical to success in school. They are placed in a grade based on their date of birth, regardless of previous schooling or none. For instance, a ten year-old child who never attended school might be placed in the fourth grade. That child has to learn to read and write on a fourth-grade level. Children born to refugees speak good English, but their parents are not able to help them with school work or navigate the education system.
Family Heritage Foundation (FHF) runs an after-school program in Clarkston, GA where these children go to receive homework help and tutorials, free of charge. These children, who are identified as trauma victims, need the emotional support of caring individuals. The after-school program also offers ministry to children from Christian homes and emotional support to youth of all faiths. The program opens four days a week and has been in existence since 2001. With the growing demand for after-school tutorials, FHF needs to hire more tutors for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year and 2020 summer camp.
FHF's total year-end goal is $25,000. We are asking for a donation of any amount, as every bit adds up to achieve the goal. Would you please sponsor a tutor who will help our after-school students through July 2020? Thank you.
