Back in the day, our parents and grandparents helped their friends and neighbors build houses and run businesses. It was just something they did, because they knew that support equals guaranteed success. Today, the descendants of the once enslaved on Sapelo Island work together to ensure cultural survival, the preservation of ancestral lands and the successful operation of each other's endeavors. SICARS is a partner here, walking alongside the community as it fights encroachment and gentrification.

We sponsor wills and heir's property clinics, help with property taxes and work to preserve the culture of Sapelo. Our Board of Directors and staff are fundraising to accrue extra dollars for  organizational capacity building, program development and land retention efforts. We hope you'll help to fund our work, as we're focused on protecting one of the last remaining Gullah-Geechee communities in the United States. Many hands make for a light load, and together we can develop our community into something that's steeped in ancestral culture but is thriving with an eye toward our future and our legacy.
