My GivingTuesday Ritual

Update posted 5 months ago

Gagives.org is a Catalog of Goodness. Thanks to GivingTuesday and GeorgiaGives, I now have an annual ritual for my personal giving at the end of the year.

1.   Get comfy, pour a soothing beverage, log on to Gagives.org.

2.   Scroll through organizations where my friends and my kids's friends work.  I like to see what they are up to, and then sprinkle a little love with a donation.

3.  Look up organizations that provide what I call "underdog services."  My personal preference is for organizations that tackle issues that are not well-funded or serve key populations that aren't able to advocate loudly.  Accessibility and affordability of essential services for people marginalized by the policy and economic system also appeal to me.  I place a priority on Operating Support.  I trust leadership to make the best use of whatever I am able to give.

I regard my small GivingTuesday gifts as "likes" that can help support general operations.  It's my way of saying to their staff:  "I see what you are doing and appreciate you."  (I also know that nonprofits look at the NUMBER of donors, new donors, returning donors in their metrics along with the AVERAGE gift and TOTAL gifts.)

Philosophies on Personal Philanthropy

Every person, young and old, who actively seeks opportunities to help others is a philanthropist.  While budgets (financial and time) can vary from year to year, it is helpful to be intentional with a general plan. This helps make decisions easier when requests come to you. If you have a smart phone and a social media account, requests are coming to you.

There are two major schools of thought regarding personal giving, and people can get quite passionate about their philosophy:

1.   Give big to one or two organizations with hopes to "move the needle" and impact change.  Big gifts are critical to launching new programs, capital campaigns, retiring debt, etc.

2.   Spread donations to several organizations each year.

My hubby and I choose a third way (not surprising if you know me):  we have a few organizations special to me/us that we support at higher levels (60% of our annual giving); several with medium support (25% of our giving); and many more with small support (15%).  The percentages have shifted over the years, as our giving ability has changed do to our personal circumstances.

When you make generosity intentional and ritualize it in your heart and calendar, the benefits to your soul and your community are immeasurable.  We truly do get more back from what we give.

Cheers!

Hello Friends,

This is my personal challenge to build awareness and push through discomfort to talk about challenging topics. The continuum from sexual harassment, stalking, bullying, commercial child sexual abuse materials (CSAM), to child sexual abuse (CSA), sextortion, trafficking, rape, stealthing, forced pregnancy creates lasting harms on the victim, their inner circle, and society.  As a society, community, family, and people, it is WAY past time to flip the script on people who display such abusive behavior.

There are so many reasons 80% of these crimes go unreported to the police and people suffer in silence. We get it.

Mosaic Georgia is here for people of all ages and backgrounds who experience the many forms of interpersonal violence. And we are committed to changing the social norms that allow sexual harms to persist.

In celebration of Giving Tuesday, the Global Day of Giving, my personal goal is to get 58 people to commit to a monthly donation to Mosaic Georgia. (One-time gifts are also greatly appreciated!).  You can help, too! Here's how:

  1. Make a donation to my fundraiser. Every little bit helps.
  2. Share my fundraiser with your social networks, friends, family, coworkers - anyone you think would like to stand up and speak out with you.
  3. Create your own Mosaic Ga fundraiser
  4. Sign up to get email updates and learn more about Mosaic Ga and how you can help.
  5. Follow Mosaic Ga on Facebook and Instagram to share their message.

Your donation helps Mosaic Georgia provide the following free services:

  • A 24/7 Crisis Line 866-900-6019 for victims of assault or abuse or those who want to help them.
  • Victim & Family Advocacy during and after disclosing assault or abuse.
  • Forensic Interviews for children and youth by investigators trained in pediatric trauma care.
  • Medical Forensic Examinations & Care in our medical center - not a hospital or police station - by medical staff who are specially trained to work with trauma victims.
  • Legal Assistance for safety and civil issues after the assault or abuse.
  • Counseling Support  & Wellness Programs to cope with trauma and begin the healing journey.
  • Housing Navigation when it is not safe to stay in the home or there is no home to return to.
  • Aftercare Support & Empowerment  Fund for those who lack the financial means to secure their safety and health after reporting assault or abuse.
  • All of these services are free  to survivors. No fees. No co-pays!

Together with Mosaic Georgia, we can help survivors put the pieces of their lives back together with dignity, safety, health, and justice.

Thank you!
