During the baby seasons, all baby bird patients require time in an outdoor aviary prior to release back to the wild. They need this to become accustomed to sharing space with other birds, learning to fly in a larger space, and to acclimate to outdoor conditions such as weather, temperature and sounds.
In 2024, we performed data analysis that supported the need to have additional aviary space in order to move our patients more quickly toward a release date. Having an additional outdoor aviary has the potential to reduce our average time in care by 1/3 for baby birds brought to us for rehabilitation.
In addition to reducing the days in care, we also would free up volunteer and inside resources to care for more patients as we tend to become constrained during this time of the year.
