Why Give?

Because the need is real—By contributing to the Carver High Class of 1970 S.P. Charleston Memorial Scholarship Fund, Inc., you are directly investing in minority students graduating from the George Washington Carver High School (G.W. CHS) in Columbus, GA, a Title I school. These students aspire to make a difference—students who embody the spirit of educational excellence, community service and service to others that the late Principal, Dr. S.P. Charleston exemplified. Your tax-deductible donation will help provide financial assistance, resources, and encouragement to deserving G.W. CHS students who might otherwise face financial barriers to achieving their dreams.

Why Your Support Is Needed?

Since awarding our first scholarships in 2011, our nonprofit has proudly supported 67 CHS seniors, awarding a total of $55,300.00 in scholarships. Our scholarships have helped students pursue their dreams in fields including, but not limited to, engineering, medicine, law, social work, information technology, education and the arts. These are not just students; they are future physicians, scientists, innovators, attorneys,  educators, entrepreneurs, artists and other leaders poised to shape a better tomorrow in the Columbus, Georgia area and beyond!

However, the need is still great. The G.W. CHS in Columbus, Georgia is a Title I school, and the cost of post-secondary tuition, fees, books, and living expenses for its minority graduates often present insurmountable barriers to their success. The financial burden doesn’t just limit a student’s ability to pursue a higher education; it also impacts their confidence, mental health, and future earning potential.

Scholarship Impact Video

In the above video, Mr. Anthony Sumbrey, a 2024 S.P. Charleston Scholar shares an inspiring testimony of the impact receiving the S.P. Charleston Memorial Scholarship in 2024 has had on his college career at the Alabama State University in Montgomery, Alabama. Mr. Sumbrey shares how the Carver High Class of 1970 S.P. Charleston Memorial Scholarship Fund has benefited him, and learn about his future aspirations after graduation.

Your Impact!

During GAgives 2025, your donation will help us achieve our $10,000 goal to empower futures and transform lives of deserving CHS minority students—just like Mr. Sumbrey and many others we have had the privilege to serve. Every contribution you make fuels our mission to provide opportunities, hope, and a brighter tomorrow for those who need it most. Together, we can continue to make a profound difference in the lives of minority students graduating from the G.W. Carver High School in Columbus, GA, turning challenges into triumphs and dreams into reality.

Over the past 15 years, this scholarship has played a pivotal role in helping to create a pathway to a post-secondary education for minority G.W. CHS students. Today, the nonprofit’s work could not be more critical as being able to afford a post-secondary education is becoming further and further out of reach for minority students. Your donation isn’t just supporting individual students – its investing in a legacy of excellence and building generational wealth through education. Scholarships are not merely financial gifts; they are instruments of transformation. They are the keys to unlocking academic success, personal growth, and a world of opportunities professionally and personally. By investing in the Carver High Class of 1970 S.P. Charleston Memorial Scholarship Fund, Inc., you are "Giving Back to Empower Futures & Transform Lives!" creating a brighter and more promising world for generations to come!
