When concerns over Covid-19 pushed the annual production of Cartersville City Ballet’s “The Nutcracker” out of its traditional live theater home, the City Ballet staff and dancers evolved the production in order to present a brand new filmed version of the show in December of 2020. It is the hope of City Ballet staff members that this project will provide a sense of holiday tradition to residents of Bartow County and Cartersville who look forward to seeing “The Nutcracker” each year. The filming process also provided innovative performing and learning opportunities for the dancers of The Cartersville City Ballet to explore.

The film has a hometown feel unique to Cartersville and Bartow County because “The Nutcracker” has been filmed at various iconic locations around town. Staff members of The Cartersville City Ballet have partnered with untraditional indoor and outdoor venues - such as gardens, historic properties, farms, restaurants and shops - to film small groups of dancers portraying characters in the production. The videographer pieced the various scenes into a seamless performance with the help of a narration. The Cartersville City Ballet dancers have been challenged in new ways with this film project by taking their traditionally indoor and controlled environments into new places. They learned about the process of staging dances in unique locations and helped to brainstorm creative ways to rejuvenate the production.

Such a new, unique production required funds to purchase portable sound equipment for outdoors, new costumes, multiple pairs of dance shoes to account for outdoor terrain and props appropriate for new venues and themes. A professional videographer was engaged to ensure the production quality was top notch. Editing the scenes together was an extensive process. Some filming locations required rental fees. There were also fees for the Cartersville City Ballet staff members to create choreography. While the experience and continued tradition of producing the show was invaluable to all the participants in these uncertain times, the cost was also great.

“The Cartersville Hometown Nutcracker” movie will be streamed online in December 2020. In order to keep ticket costs low and therefore accessible to as many people as possible, The Cartersville City Ballet hopes to raise funds to recoup production costs. Any donation is sincerely appreciated.

Tickets to stream the “Cartersville Hometown Nutcracker” will be available at CartersvilleSchoolofBallet.com soon.
