In the last few years, I've witnessed several loved ones have to unexpectedly navigate our health care system. They all attended appointment after appointment, asking questions, sometimes getting answers, being sent for this test and then that test before finally getting a diagnosis that felt like it required re-starting the entire process. Through all of this, their main concern was how to optimize their personal health outcomes, not wondering how much debt this essential care could possibly result in or what type of care they'd have to decline because they couldn't afford it. Because they were insured with reliable coverage.
I share this because I recognize how fortunate I and my loved ones are to be able to access the screenings and treatments we need to stay well; this is a fortune I believe all Georgians should be able to access. And, access to health insurance coverage that makes these seemingly unavoidable health care costs (more) affordable is just one small slice of the larger mixed-up health care policy pie.
Georgians for a Healthy Future (GHF) works tirelessly, across several policy priorities, to build a present and future Georgia in which all residents can access the preventive, behavioral, and medical health care they need. As a nonprofit policy organization, they spend as much time partnering with and working in the communities they advocate for as they do interfacing with the Georgia legislators who make the final decisions about our health care realities. GHF equips individuals and communities with the tools they need to navigate our current health care landscape while simultaneously working with organizations and policy makers to make that landscape safer and more equitable for all Georgians.
I support GHF because we share the same vision, "a day in which all Georgians have equitable opportunities to achieve their highest level of health." I support GHF because I don't believe that anybody should be forced to choose between receiving the life-saving care they need or paying their rent. I support GHF because I want to live in the Georgia they're collaboratively trying to build. I hope you'll join me in supporting them on this Giving Tuesday.
