ALS disease, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, affects as many as 30,000 people in the United States at any given time, with 5,000 new cases being diagnosed each year. Estimates also suggest that ALS is responsible for as many as five of every 100,000 deaths in people aged 20 or older. Janice Overbeck, an Atlanta native, has experienced the effects of the disease first-hand. After Overbeck lost her father to ALS in 2015, she has been committed to help find a cure for the disease that took her father’s life. Overbeck works closely with the ALS Research Center at Emory University to raise funds and support research for a cure. In 2016, she founded her charity JO Gives, Inc., which focuses on animal advocacy and raising funds and awareness for Emory ALS Research Center. Since the inception of JO Gives, Overbeck has hosted numerous fundraisers to support the Emory ALS Research Center such as Art Shows for ALS, Celebrity Poker for ALS and she has also been the presenting sponsor for Golf Tournaments and 5k runs for ALS. To date, Overbeck has raised and personally donated over $200,000 for the Emory ALS Research Center. The Emory ALS Research Center is boldly engaged in research ranging from answering questions about the causes of ALS to the clinical trials of new treatment drugs to benefit those with the disease. Many ALS patients are living longer and more productive lives as research advances into the causes, ways of preventing, and treating the disease. But more research is needed to better understand the disease and determine possible risk factors that may contribute to its development.
