Many of you know that I serve as a member of the board of directors and as a volunteer attorney for Georgia Asylum and Immigration Network (GAIN). GAIN provides free legal services to people seeking asylum in the U.S. who have been the victims of trafficking, violence, or persecution in their home country.
GAIN is resilient. Since the start of the pandemic, the GAIN staff and volunteer attorneys have worked tirelessly to find ways to continue to meet the needs of its clients virtually, and offer financial relief to struggling families. Additionally, as the world watched the humanitarian crisis unfold in Afghanistan earlier this year, GAIN quickly responded by launching Project Ally, which offers immigration relief effort for Afghan families in Georgia and beyond. To sustain this important work, GAIN relies on the generosity of its donors.
On #GivingTuesday, I am making my gift to GAIN in honor of my clients and in memory of my Sitto (Arabic for grandmother). Sitto immigrated to the U.S. in 1950 from Lebanon in search of opportunity. She spoke no English and owned very few worldly possessions, but she believed deeply in the "American Dream." I stand on her shoulders and I am eternally grateful for her sacrifice.
