Women Engaged (WE) is a human rights nonprofit (501c3) organization that takes a groundbreaking, hands-on learning approach to championing gender justice and democracy issues using a Black feminist analysis, reproductive justice framework, and an integrated voter engagement strategy in Georgia. WE understand that Black women, femmes, and girls are pivotal leaders in creating critical change and building power in our state. If leadership is an exercise in wielding power for the greater good, then WE’s mission is to help the disenfranchised tap into their power.

WE prioritize voter activation, leadership development, and community engagement and those pillars have led to many successes. Our work has contributed to historic voter participation and reproductive justice advocacy in Georgia, including:

  • Record Black voter registration gains since 2016

  • Mobilizing tens of thousands of voters through calls, texts, and in-person outreach

  • Counteracting voter fatigue and apathy during pivotal elections, including the 2021 Senate Runoffs

  • Engaging voters about expanding healthcare in Georgia to include comprehensive reproductive healthcare, and actualizing reparations in Georgia

Every dollar you give strengthens a movement where Black women’s leadership is valued, supported, and unstoppable. Your support will continue WE’s ability to:

  • Defend reproductive freedom

  • Train and mentor the next generation of leaders

  • Build sustained civic and voter participation in communities most impacted by injustice

  • Expand cross-movement collaborations that strengthen Georgia’s progressive future

Programs

Our signature initiative, WE Vote. WE Rise! (WVWR) is a non-partisan voter empowerment program that engages new and inactive voters in civic participation. Through 'Get out the Vote' campaigns and community outreach, the program offers leadership opportunities too, maintaining continuous engagement with recently contacted young voters. Civic engagement efforts include personalized response calls, in-depth door-to-door conversations, phone banking, strategic social media networking, relational organizing, and innovative approaches to understanding the issues important to our targeted voters.

Governance

Under the leadership of CEO Malika Redmond, the first reproductive justice leader in the country elected Board Chair of the ProGeorgia (ProGA) Civic Engagement Table, Women Engaged has achieved significant organizational growth, fundraising success, stability, and key electoral impact helping register and “Get out the Vote” efforts resulting in thousands of new and inactive voters participating over the past decade even through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, attacks on reproductive freedom, and anti-Black racial violence and reckoning of 2020. With Malika’s guidance WE has strengthened our foundation for the next decade of impact.

Alongside Malika, Michelle Wilson, our Chief Operating Officer and Vice Chair of ProGA, brings over 20 years of advocacy, organizing, and political education experience. A longtime movement leader, Michelle has shaped WE’s program design and team care strategies, weaving together storytelling, popular education, and gaming into powerful organizing approaches that engage people across multiple identities and lived experiences.
