Vanguard Leadership Academy

Vanguard Leadership Academy (VLA) is an organization that’s dedicated to making a significant impact on the lives of high school students, particularly those who are underserved and overlooked. With a mission to propel these students to reach their highest potential, VLA provides learning and leadership opportunities that are crucial for personal, academic, and professional development.  

Founded by Judge Hilliard Castilla and Judge M. Gino Brogdon Sr., our leadership team is passionate about nurturing the potential of every young person they encounter, especially those who have been left behind or counted out. The academy’s approach is multifaceted, focusing on exposure, education, instilling confidence, and creating a community that supports the growth and development of its students.

Who We Serve:   VLA serves youth primarily aged 12 to 18, in Atlanta Public Schools and surrounding areas. We specifically target the "invisible students"—those who are neither the highest nor the lowest achievers and typically receive the least support. We strive to create inclusive spaces where every young person feels valued, heard, and empowered to not only grow but lead.

Our Programs:  

Summer Leadership Academy (SLA): Our Summer Leadership Academy focuses on developing leadership skills and personal growth for youth in underserved communities. Our initiative provides these students with ongoing enrichment, coaching, and access to meaningful experiences and volunteer activities. More than just a summer intensive, SLA offers a comprehensive year-round program that includes enrichment and mentorship to foster both academic and personal growth. In partnership with Atlanta Public Schools and hosted at Daniel McLaughlin Therrell High School, SLA invites high school students to participate in a transformative 4-week program.

Youth Leadership Ambassador Program (YLAP):  Launched in November of 2023, this program enhances leadership skills through peer ongoing mentorship, enrichment and education, and representation of VLA in broader community activities and service. 

Project NEXT: With a Department of Labor Approved Program, this initiative will offer practical apprenticeships to provide hands-on experience in various industries, bridging the gap between education and professional environments, and expanding the opportunity for youth to discover the path that is right for them and contribute to their communities.  We currently offer apprenticeships for Electrical and Construction.

Our Approach: VLA adopts a holistic education model, closely collaborating with Atlanta Public School social workers, counselors, teachers, and community leaders to identify and nurture hidden potential within each student. Our integrated programs leverage community resources and experienced leaders to foster leadership and community engagement. 

Partnership Impact: Through our partnership with Therrell High School, we are directly advancing Therrell's mission to nurture and challenge students, preparing them to excel as global citizens with a strong education and values. By investing in programs that empower young people to become proactive and compassionate leaders within their communities, we are aligning with Therrell's vision for its graduates. Our approach, centered on holistic education, confidence-building, awareness-raising, and community involvement, perfectly complements Therrell's commitment to fostering well-rounded individuals. Funding from our organization will serve as a cornerstone in achieving significant outcomes, including Leadership Skills Development, Community Engagement, Personal Responsibility, Social and Emotional Development, Career and Entrepreneurial Readiness, and Financial Literacy.
