Our Mission

Tapestri is a 501c3 non-profit dedicated to ending violence and oppression in immigrant and refugee communities using culturally competent and linguistically appropriate methods. As advocates for immigrants and refugees affected by human trafficking, domestic violence, unaccompanied minors, sexual assault, and exploitation, Tapestri uses education, community organizing, direct services, and advocacy to improve the lives of those it serves.

Our name, Tapestri, symbolizes the different threads of society coming together to form a safe cover to protect its many-colored communities.

Our Vision

We believe every person, men and women alike, has the right to Live Without Fear.

Tapestri exists to increase access to services for refugee and immigrant communities. We believe everyone should be able to seek and receive help and services which are respectful of her or his community, language, culture, gender, race, age, sexual orientation, disability, and religious beliefs. Recognizing that this is a lifelong process, Tapestri staff, board members, and partners attempt to live and model these values through interactions within our communities and among ourselves.

We do not see domestic violence, sexual assault, and exploitation as the problem of an individual, couple, or even one particular community, but rather, a human rights issue. It is a phenomenon perpetuated in societies in which gender inequality and violence are accepted. Tapestri seeks to educate individuals and agencies so that these destructive norms will not continue into the next generation.

Our History

To address the unmet needs of battered refugee and immigrant women in metro Atlanta, advocates from diverse ethnic communities formed a coalition in 1996. In 1998, the coalition adopted the name “Tapestri” and functioned as a project of the Refugee Women’s Network.

In 2002, Tapestri became an independent 501c3 nonprofit to address the needs of foreign-born survivors of violence. Since 2002, we have evolved to work collaboratively with mainstream and ethnic organizations to address multiple forms of gender-based violence and oppression in refugee and immigrant communities.

In 2008, Tapestri was awarded the Community Partnership Award by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and in 2012 was named the Best Place to Work by Opportunity Knocks. In 2017, Tapestri joined the Coalition of Refugee Service Agencies.
