
The St. Simons African American Heritage Coalition (SSAAHC) manages the Historic Harrington School Cultural Center (Historic Harrington School), located on St. Simons Island, GA. The mission of the SSAAHC is to educate, preserve, and revitalize African American heritage and culture. The 101-year-old schoolhouse was restored in 2017. The Historic Harrington School was built for the Gullah Geechee African American children, by native artisans who lived in the historic community. For the last 8 years, the Historic Harrington School has been a cultural hub for local guests and tourists from regions throughout the world. Inside the doors you will find storytelling, artifacts, cultural history, education and more. The host site for fundraising activities and the cornerstone event, Taste of Gullah, a popular foodway, with entertainment, cultural presentations by the iconic RingShouters --supported by the community, attendees, vendors and more.
The Historic Harrington School is maintained by charitable and philanthropic donations.
SSAAHC is raising funds for the upkeep and the work done at the schoolhouse, digitizing some of the historical collections and docent training.
