The South Cobb Lions Club was established in 1952 and has been serving the community since that time. We are a part of the International Lions Club which has 1.4 million volunteers around the world helping communities in various causes. Lions Club International has specific causes listed in its mission statement for all its clubs. The Five Global Causes that we strive to improve upon are listed below.
Diabetes Awareness - As we participate in health fairs and other local events, we distribute approved educational materials for healthy eating habits and lower sugar consumption. Diabetes is a leading cause of blindness.
Vision - During the 2022–2023-year, South Cobb Lions Club screened over 4,000 students in the local schools, with a failure rate of 18.4%. Our screening detects eye problems in younger students. In many cases, the problem is caught early, and corrected before it becomes a permanent condition. We’ve worked with other Cobb County clubs during the 2023-2024 years, and have screened over 15,000 elementary students in 46 schools. Families who cannot afford eye care can receive financial assistance through the GA Lions Lighthouse Foundation. This Global Cause provides support for blind people, guide dog acquisition/training, and a GA Lions Camp located in South Georgia designed as a fun and safe vacation spot for blind and mentally disabled children.
Hunger Relief – South Cobb Lions Club assists weekly with local food banks distributing food throughout our community to those who have hunger issues is primary. During the 2022-2023 year, we assisted Sweetwater Mission with their weekly food distributions providing 10,523 families in obtaining groceries, produce, and other nutritional items.
Environment Preservation - During the 2022-2023 year, we removed 515 bags of litter from our eight adopted roads in South Cobb. We’ve assisted others with their adopt-a-mile groups, and removed 1340 bags of litter. We are also responsible for reporting dumped furniture, tires, and shopping carts to Cobb DOT through their SeeClickFix App so that they may be removed from our roadways. Without our involvement, we would have a major litter problem in South Cobb.
Childhood Cancer – Lions Clubs across Georgia have been very successful in delivering Legos, toys, puzzles, reading material, and PJs to various children’s hospitals. South Cobb Lions Club donates Chad’s Brackets (red flyer wagons that can hold I.V.s) to roll children around the hospital rooms examination rooms and other hospital areas.
We are asking for your support to continue our work in the community.
