The COVID-19 crisis has shown devastating effects to our community's most vulnerable families. Now, more than ever, Simple Needs GA’s Cobb County clients need our help in the form of household essentials, such as beds and mattresses, basic kitchen items, and cleaning supplies. While some of our regular events and programs are suspended right now out of safety concerns, we are helping in ways that allow us to protect our clients by following social-distancing and sanitation guidelines. For example, donated items are quarantined for several days and/or wiped down with approved disinfectants. Clients are advised to follow these same protocols after receiving the donated items, and volunteers who deliver them put them outside rather than going into clients’ houses or apartments.
Our efforts include things like donating toilet paper to seniors in need, working with members of a church who are delivering toys and art supplies to kids living in extended-stay hotels, and shipping mattresses and other basic items to families in dire need
We would appreciate your financial donation to support our mission – for what we are doing now and what we will need to do down the road. We expect quite a few evictions later this year; when they recover from that situation and find new homes, they will need furniture. We hope to be able to keep up with the demand at that time.
Last year we brought brand-new birthday presents, school supplies, socks and underwear, and other needed items to more than 250 homeless and disadvantaged children. We delivered furniture and household items to 150 families and individuals transitioning out of homelessness, gave out 185 cleaning kits to families who struggle to afford such basics, and also distributed about 100 tents and sleeping bags to people who live in the woods, not to mention approximately 1,300 Comfort Kits (bags of full-sized toiletries) for shelter check-ins.
Here's a quick summary of our programs:
My Birthday Matters: Through school social workers and shelter staff, we obtain wish lists from homeless kids and then provide them with birthday gifts and other useful items.
Simple Household Needs: Provides people emerging from homelessness with furniture, beds and other items they need to turn a new house or apartment into a “home.” We also give cleaning kits (those supplies are not covered by food stamps) to these clients.
Shoe Them Love: New shoes so that disadvantaged children no longer have to wear only hand-me-downs. We collect $25 gift cards or new shoes.
Spirit of Christmas: “Fills in the gaps” by helping families in Cobb County who were unable to register for other local Christmas programs such as the MUST Toy Shop, Cobb Christmas and Toys for Tots.
Comfort Kits: Duffel bags packed with full-sized toiletries and other items for residents at local homeless shelters, who often arrive with little more than the clothes on their backs.
Simply Sheltered: Tents, sleeping bags, tarps, candles and other essential items to help people experiencing homelessness be more comfortable.
Uniforms for Excellence: Helps Cobb County schoolchildren “dress for success” by providing them with required school uniforms their families struggle to afford. Donors provide gently used khakis, skirts and polo shirts that meet the requirements of individual schools. Alternately, they fund the purchase of brand-new uniforms.
