Lutheran Towers is a nonprofit senior community that provides affordable housing and holistic evidence-based supportive services for extremely poor elderly persons that empowers them to thrive.

Because of their extremely low retirement incomes, our residents are both at risk of homelessness and are food insecure which means that their available funds for food run out each month before the month’s end. 98% of our residents are food insecure. In 2018, this finding led Lutheran Towers to establish a free feeding program, in collaboration with the USDA, on-site for our residents. In 2019, with the support of community partners, Lutheran Towers expanded our resident free feeding programs to include a food pantry to better meet their needs. That year, we disseminated 21,000 pounds of free food to our residents. In 2020, for the first time in Lutheran Towers' history, we disseminated more than 70,000 pounds of free food to our residents.

As of October 2021, we have disseminated 65,295 pounds of food with anticipation of 100,000 pounds of food disseminated by the end of the year.

We are the first senior housing program to establish free feeding programs for our residents.

At the onset of COVID-19, Lutheran Towers took immediate steps to meet urgent needs while safeguarding residents and staff against exposure. Our onsite free food pantry was stocked to capacity to provide very necessary food and toiletries for our residents. We expanded partnerships with local nonprofit organizations and service providers to bring fresh foods and prepared meals to residents' homes. We provided every resident and staff with adequate personal protective equipment (PPE). To reduce social isolation, we are performing daily wellness checks, which is especially important for seniors who are at greater risk for loneliness and isolation.

Our supportive services have been reimagined to take place virtually to promote social interaction. In the era of COVID-19, to help our residents’ capacity to stay connected to their relatives and others safely, we expanded the availability of Wi-Fi throughout our community. Wi-Fi access and free technology training empower our residents to stay connected with their community, access healthcare appointments and avoid social isolation.

During the pandemic, to help our desperately poor residents stay healthy, Lutheran Towers has ramped up our supportive programs and services. This has inured greatly to the benefit of our residents’ physical and mental health. To continue to provide free feeding programs for our desperately poor residents, we need your financial help.

We appreciate all who are supportive of our mission to help our residents thrive. To learn more about Lutheran Towers, please visit our website at
