“In the same breath, the doctor said: ‘Ma’am, you have blood cancer, bone cancer, bone marrow cancer, and myeloma.”

Multiple chemotherapy treatments numbed Ammy’s sensation in her fingers, making cooking dangerous. It’s what brought her to Open Hand. However, treatment also dulled her tastebuds, which was devastating for the avid traveler and lifetime foodie. Everything had begun to feel like paper in her mouth. 

“The first thing I could taste? Open Hand. I’ll never forget. I get emotional thinking about it.”

Most of our clients are like Ammy: living with a chronic or severe illness and depending on Open Hand to keep them strong while they manage their diagnosis. Groceries costs are continuing to rise, and so have the number of Georgians looking to Open Hand for the nutrition and care they need.
