From Heartbreak to Hope: The Power of Recreational Therapy

In 2017, we launched the first BusiNeighbor Veterans Recreation Center to combat the alienation so many veterans feel. It became a safe haven, offering a fitness room, computer lab, library, and meaningful activities that brought veterans together. This wasn’t just another sterile hospital setting—it was a place to connect, laugh, and heal.

Veterans told us over and over: traditional treatments often felt like barriers. Medications came with side effects they didn’t want. Group therapy left them feeling more isolated once the sessions ended. But at our center, something different happened. They formed genuine relationships. They found purpose. For many, it became the highlight of their week—a place to simply enjoy life again. With the support of local businesses, we offered free meals, haircuts, and even massages. And the impact was undeniable: stress levels dropped, hope returned, and lives were changed.

But then, tragedy struck. A devastating flood forced us to close and sell the facility. For many veterans, this loss wasn’t just the closure of a building—it was the loss of a lifeline.
