Preventing and Reversing Homelessness and Hunger in Intown Atlanta

Intown Cares helps prevent and reverse homelessness and hunger in Intown Atlanta by meeting people where they are and helping them move toward greater stability. For 16 years, we have walked alongside neighbors facing some of life’s hardest challenges. We help people experiencing homelessness navigate the journey toward housing, and we provide easy access to food for anyone who needs it.

At the heart of our work is a simple belief: every person deserves dignity.

Housing Is the Destination. Navigation Is the Journey.

For someone who has spent months or years without stable housing, finding a home can be a complicated process. There may be documents to replace, benefits to access, appointments to attend, applications to complete and systems to navigate.

Our Homeless Services team meets people where they are, including outdoors where unsheltered neighbors live and gather. Case managers build relationships over time and provide the practical support people need to move through the housing process. That can include obtaining identification and other essential documents, accessing benefits, getting to appointments, connecting with health and mental health services, completing housing applications, accessing food and transportation, and advocating for clients along the way.

In FY2025, our team enrolled 520 neighbors, provided 9,219 navigation services and helped 251 neighbors find stable housing.

We believe housing should be the starting point for a new chapter, not a reward for first meeting a series of other conditions.

Food Is More Than Nourishment. Food Is Dignity.

Our Food Programs provide low-barrier access to groceries for neighbors experiencing food insecurity, including people who are unhoused, neighbors transitioning into housing, seniors living on fixed incomes and neighbors who have difficulty traveling to a pantry.

Our food pantry is designed to be simple and dignified. Guests can visit without requirements, paperwork or judgment. We also provide grocery deliveries to neighbors who cannot easily access the pantry.

For many neighbors, food assistance is about more than having something to eat. It can mean stretching a limited income, staying in a longtime home or making room in the budget for other essential expenses.

One pantry guest, a 70-year-old neighbor who lives nearby on a fixed income, told us that receiving free food helped them save money while trying to remain in their home of 39 years.

“I have never felt judged — not once.”

That is what dignity looks like in practice: having access to something as basic as food without having to sacrifice your privacy, choices or sense of worth.

Why Persistence Matters.

Homelessness and hunger do not always have quick solutions. Finding housing can be a long process, and our neighbors should not have to navigate that process alone. Our case managers stay alongside each person, providing support through the steps toward stable housing. Our food programs operate week after week, rain or shine, so neighbors can count on having access to nourishing food when they need it. We stay committed through the process because stability takes time.

And we do this work together. In FY2025, 362 volunteers contributed 5,797 hours helping with food pantry shifts, grocery deliveries, barber services and other activities. Their time, along with the support of our donors and community partners, helps us keep showing up for our neighbors.
