Horizons at Kennesaw State University

A nonprofit organization

Kennesaw State University entered a partnership with Horizons in 2015. This partnership proved to be transformational in the first summer. We expected to see academic growth and hoped to build confidence and instill a love of learning within each child.

Assessments of academic progress validated our anticipated outcome of growth.  Reading and math scores provided hard data proving that instructional practices were effective.  Measurable gains are always good; however, immeasurable transformations within the spirit of the children and their families are at the core of these achievements.

Most students came to our program not knowing how to swim and fearful of the water.  Overcoming this fear and learning to trust our qualified instructors built self-esteem that spilled over into the classroom.

Being embraced in an atmosphere filled with respect and consideration for others made relationship building a simpler process for everyone. Friendships developed out of a sense of belonging to a special community of learners. We were at the Silver Comet Trail for a bike ride when I saw 5 of our children holding hands while listening to a man explain how his recumbent bike worked.

Relationships extended into the community as stories of Horizons KSU activities filled with successes were shared. Extended family members, neighbors, friends, and community leaders attended our end of the summer celebration.

Fourteen children from last year are returning and our new kindergarten class has a waiting list. Help us make this an extraordinary FUN summer of learning and growth and for 30 children.
