Now in the 28th year, Giwayen Mata - the “all sistah” dance, percussion, and vocal ensemble, continues to bring the excitement and passion of the African Diaspora to Atlanta and beyond!  These dynamic “Elephant Leaders of Women” uplift and educate audiences by expressing the joys of life and creation through dance, song, narrative, and the heartbeat of their drums.  

Girls of all ages are inspired by Giwayen Mata programming. Arata Maat knew at 4 years old that she wanted to become a Giwayen Mata. At 25, she attained that goal.

The power of the drum moves many women to continue to come to Giwayen Mata's circle.

Giwayen Mata brings a legacy of community activism and engagement through teaching dance classes, encouraging self-care/awareness, and partnering with self-help agencies and schools in an effort to bring life to the meaning of Sankofa: an Akan term that says the past serves as a guide for planning the future. To the Akan, it is this wisdom in learning from the past which ensures a strong future.

A new creative era of Giwayen Mata leadership is led by Artistic Director, Tambra Omiyale Harris. Plans for 2022 include an ambitious calendar of ensemble professional development, community engagement, and creative asset-building planned to further build relationships and organizational stamina. 

An international following of more than 7,000 followers and more than 4 million viewers enjoy the work of Giwayen Mata's energetic virtual dance classes.
