Friends of the Savannah Coastal Wildlife Refuges

Help Us Restore Weather Protection for Our Wildlife Refuge Tour Wagons!

The Friends of the Savannah Coastal Wildlife Refuges (FSCWR) is an organization of volunteers from coastal Georgia and South Carolina dedicated to preserving and protecting the seven National Wildlife Refuges in our area. Our group organizes educational activities and tours, helps with maintenance and upkeep, and staffs the Visitor Center at Savannah National Wildlife Refuge.

For years, Refuge staff and FSCWR volunteers conducted wildlife tours at three of the SCWR: Savannah, Pinckney Island and Harris Neck NWRs. The tour wagons provide a unique, open-air experience that connects visitors of all ages with nature through interpretive programs, providing an up-close look at our incredible coastal habitats and wildlife while inspiring a deeper appreciation for the importance of conservation.

Unfortunately, in January 2025, a devastating ice storm caused the roof of the pole barn where the wagons were stored to collapse, damaging both tour wagons and destroying the canopies and support frames that protected passengers from the sun and rain. As a result, the wagons currently have no weather protection, limiting our ability to provide a comfortable experience for visitors in changing weather conditions.

We are seeking support to replace the wagon awnings and restore this essential protection for our passengers. Your contribution will help us bring these educational tours back to their full potential, allowing families, students, and visitors to safely enjoy the beauty of our National Wildlife Refuges while learning about the wildlife and habitats that make these places so special.

Our goal is to raise $9,000 to restore one of the wagon awnings, and each dollar raised will be matched by outside dollars to get the second wagon re-outfitted!...(we can use GH income, donations, etc. to match)  Please consider donating today and help us get these wagons ready to roll—rain or shine!

Thank you for supporting outdoor education and helping connect people with nature!
