Freemantown Historical Foundation is a newly formed  501C3 Historical Nonprofit to support and preserve its history.

Freemantown Community was founded over150 years ago by an enterprising black family on what is now Berry College property. Thomas Freeman entered the 44 infantry of the United States Colored Army. Thomas got injured during the war and returned to Rome, Georgia. Once returning home he with his father and 2 brothers purchased 500+ acres of land and developed Freemantown Community allowing another afro Americans to harvest the land, which thrived. They had houses, a church, a school, a store as well as a blacksmith shop to earn a living. In the early. 1900's the land was sold to Martha Berry founder of Berry College, the last piece of land was sold in 1926. After the sale of the land, all that was left was the cemetery. The families scattered and moved to different parts of the country. It was not until 2010 that it was discovered again by Cheryl Freman Snipes a 5th generation Freeman. She begins her quest to reconnect with the family with the assistance and support of  Berry College. Cheryl has made this history a priority in 2013 Cheryl hosted the first ever family reunion on the property, going on to develop a nonprofit. In 2023 Cheryl will host the 3rd family reunion on the property.
