A Real Musical Community, In Real Life. 



Co-founded in 2015 and led by legendary musician Frank Hamilton (co-founder of Chicago’s fabled Old Town School of Folk Music, former member of The Weavers) and a gifted, caring faculty, the Frank Hamilton School offers group classes on many acoustic instruments as well as group performance, singing, and specialty offerings. 

The Second Half brings all the classes together. Like a community jam session, it provides an opportunity for teachers and students alike to share, make music together, and learn from each other. 

The last year has seen FHS participants and teaching artists reaching out into Metro Atlanta even more ~ bringing their gifts to community events, farmer's markets, busking areas, and senior centers.

The Frank Hamilton School Artist Series at Waller's Coffee Shop, featuring the brilliant musicianship and community spirit of our Teaching Artists was inaugurated this year ~ a resounding success! 

Everyone is a Musician.

“Music is a natural birthright,” says Frank Hamilton – an ability, like speech, that “everyone shares to some degree.” The “folk approach” to teaching bypasses formal musical training, emphasizing the social and auditory aspects of music, where learning happens in a supportive environment. Frank: “We wanted to see involvement by people who wouldn’t normally think they had musical talent - bring out whatever they had.”

The goal of the Frank Hamilton School is to create a close-knit musical community where all styles of music can be made available to everyone who wants to learn. In our fragmented, screen-saturated society, the need for the communal joy of face-to-face music making is greater than ever.
