About Us

The Atlanta Children’s Day Shelter is committed to breaking the cycle of homelessness and poverty for families by building pathways to long-term self-sufficiency.

Founded in 1986 by the Junior League of Atlanta to respond to the rising number of homeless families with young children in Metro Atlanta, the Atlanta Children’s Day Shelter serves families experiencing homelessness, supporting both children and their parents as a two-generation approach to achieve stability.

The Atlanta Children’s Day Shelter provides 100% free services, including tuition-free early childhood education and comprehensive family support services for the parents and children we serve from infancy through pre-K.

Featured Campaigns

The Atlanta Children’s Day Shelter engages its community with signature fundraising events and campaigns throughout the year to elevate awareness, celebrate families, and drive philanthropic support. Some of these include:

  • Holiday House: A marquee year-end event where the community comes together to support families served by the Day Shelter, delivering gifts, celebration, and hope during the holidays.
  • Legacy Builders Celebration: A mid-year event dedicated to celebrating graduates of our program and creating space to reflect upon the legacy we strive to build together — one where homelessness is defeated and every child has a safe and nurturing home.
  • Volunteer and corporate engagement campaigns: such as partnerships with companies like KBP Brands, Warner Bros. Discovery & Gresham Smith who support the Day Shelter not only financially but through volunteer events drives, toy-drives, classroom engagement, etc.

Giving Activity

  • The Atlanta Children’s Day Shelter relies on generous support of individual donors, corporate partners, foundations, and event participants to fund our tuition-free programs and wrap-around services.
  • Donors can contribute via annual campaigns, event sponsorships, in-kind donations (e.g., toy drives for Holiday House), and volunteer service.
  • Volunteers have opportunities to support early childhood education in classrooms, assist with family service programs, and participate in special events—providing high-impact service where donors can see tangible change.

Campaigns Supporting Our Organization

  • Holiday House: A yearly flagship campaign that rallies community support for families served by the Day Shelter—combining fundraising, gift drives, and volunteer engagement around the holiday season.
  • Thematic Giving Campaigns: During the year, the Atlanta Children’s Day Shelter runs themed initiatives (e.g., Nat’l Diaper Need Awareness Week, World Homeless  Day, Nat’l Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and more) that tie donor giving to family stories, enrichment experiences, and expanded support services.
  • Corporate and Foundation Partnerships: Strategic collaborations (e.g., with Herbalife Nutrition Foundation, Yardi) where companies provide targeted support for nutrition, enrichment, classroom supplies, family-services expansion, and volunteer activation.
