We are the eyes and ears of the watershed and estuary.
We serve as the primary jurisdictional agent to protect environmental values of the river. At a time when government funds to enforce environmental regulations are dwindling, non-profit organizations like Satilla Riverkeeper are indispensable.
The Satilla River is a unique, sinuous blackwater river with dramatic white sandbars, well known for recreation, beautiful river swamps, and abundant redbreast sunfish. It is among the blackest rivers because rainwater slowly percolates through acidic soils of coastal plain pinelands and wetlands – creating an effect similar to tea leaves staining a hot cup water. If not overloaded or altered, such natural processes produce a pristine river, full of fish and wildlife. Endangered species still thrive here, including swallowtail kites, bald eagles, freshwater clams, Sturgeon, and swamp lilies. But assaults on water quality and quantity from a century of rapid population growth now press the limits of nature’s restorative abilities. Satilla Riverkeeper is here to ensure that this important Southeast Georgia river is restored and protected for our communities, now and into the future!
Your donations to Satilla Riverkeeper will help fund our work throughout the year.
-Visit Atlanta during the legislative session to advocate for clean water.
