Kate's Club is an Atlanta-based non-profit organization whose mission is to empower children and teens facing the life after the death of a parent or sibling. Kate's Club provides social and emotional grief support services to children ages 5-18 in metropolitan Atlanta and surrounding areas, at no cost to the child's family. By creating a safe, uplifting environment and providing them with critical skills to cope during a difficult and vulnerable time in their lives, Kate's Club programs have a positive impact on grieving youth by preparing them to be productive, healthy members of their families and communities.
Why We Do What We Do:
The premature death of a parent or sibling exposes a child to a great range of emotions, and they are often left without the support necessary to understand their reaction to loss or express their grief in a healthy way. Research has shown that the failure to address the needs of grieving children can significantly affect school performance, causing anxiety, lower self-esteem and more aggressive behavior. Unresolved grief and the inability to cope with the death of a loved one also play a significant role in the abuse of alcohol or drugs, depression and risk of suicide.
Kate's Club has developed therapeutic programming to help our children and teens establish healthy support systems and develop the necessary skills to cope effectively with their grief - a foundation that we believe is critical to supporting children who must cope with a tragic loss.
We foster positive social and emotional development through four main programs including:
Club Outings -
- Group activities such as art therapy, music therapy, recreation therapy, and circus arts that are designed and led by licensed professionals. Support Services include Clubhouse Days, Parent's Park
Bench, and Holiday H.U.G.S.
Fun and social outings to various Atlanta area attractions, including trips to the theatre, sporting events, community service and other cultural enriching activities and exhibits.
Good Mourning - A three-day retreat held at Camp Twin Lakes in Rutledge, Georgia each summer. Campers enjoy a balance of fun camp adventures (swimming, hiking, rock climbing, etc.) and therapeutic grief support activities (healing circles and memory ceremonies).
- For children that may be unable to attend Support Services at our Clubhouse, it is a collaboration with schools and community organizations to provide an uplifting, safe place where grieving children can come together to express grief.
