PRENATAL EDUCATON: From pre and post-tests of the 156 women we served, we saw increases in knowledge on HIV transmission, safe sleep practices and benefits of breastfeeding. There was also a 35.5% increase in participant knowledge of birth spacing (knowing that there should be 18 months between last delivery and next conception). Birth spacing is one of the leading strategies to prevent prematurity and low birthweight.
BUILDING PERINATAL PROFESSIONALS: In 2018, we launched a program to provide scholarship and support for 20 women to become certified as Childbirth Educators or Doulas. Our goal is to increase the number of families that have access to perinatal support professionals. We also offered 5 free webinars for maternal and child health professionals on best practices to move the needle on health disparities in Georgia.
COALITION BUILDING & ADVOCACY: In 2018, we worked with Coalition partners to successfully advocate for the following appropriations: $2 million for Georgia’s Maternal Mortality Review Committee (Georgia ranks 50th in maternal mortality), $250,000 to establish and launch a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Peer Recovery Coaching Program (DBHDD) and $500,000 to support Group Prenatal Care for Medicaid Recipients.
ACCESS TO VITAL RESOURCES: HMHB also operates three lines of business in our Call Center, one of which is the Georgia Family Healthline (1-800-300-9003). We serve thousands of families each year to access needed referrals for resources, public benefits, and healthcare providers. Our Information & Referral Specialists handle over 4,000 calls each month in more than 22 languages. We have requests for a variety of resources and providers, most of which are for pediatricians and other physicians who accept sliding scale payments or Medicaid benefits.
We are truly grateful to our partners, friends and supporters for their dedication to improving maternal and child health in Georgia. We invite you to make an end of year contribution to Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition of Georgia to support the work ahead.

Our goal is raise $50,000 by December 31, 2018 through contributions from supporters and members like you. We hope to raise $25,000 in the month of November through the Georgia Gives Day and Facebook platforms!

As a 501(c)3 non-profit, all contributions are tax deductible.  To date, we have already raised $20,000 in pledges and donations. Please help us reach our goal!

In 2019, we will continue our work with Coalition partners to advocate for policies during the legislative session that promote better outcomes for maternal and infant health in Georgia, including:
-Legislation that protects pregnant women and new mothers from discrimination in the workplace.
-Increased access to prenatal care and support in rural and underserved areas of the State by establishing six HMHB satellite perinatal support sites, one for each perinatal region.
-Reducing Georgia’s abysmal infant and maternal mortality rates by addressing consistent disparities in outcomes by race/ethnicity, the rural vs. urban divide, and insurance status.

We thank you for your ongoing support and look forward to working with you to make sure that every mother and child in Georgia will have access to resources for a healthier life.
