With your help, this year, we transformed Cris' life
through the wonder of medicine and the spirit of love

Cris was born with a rare and severe facial cleft. Years ago a US surgeon was introduced to Cris’s case while on a mission trip in Guatemala. Because it was determined his medical condition required treatment too complex to be completed in Guatemala, Cris was brought to Cincinnati, Ohio where the same surgeon performed the first of many surgeries. Since then Cris has returned to Cincinnati a few times to receive subsequent procedures as his surgeon labors to achieve improved facial symmetry and function. In the fall of 2017 Childspring sponsored Cris’ most recent trip to the US to receive a bone graft to attain the desired symmetry of his face, as well as an eyelid release to enable him to sleep more easily.

While Cris was in the US he shared a host family with Katherin, a Childspring child also from Guatemala. Because of his frequent visits to the US for treatment, Cris is an experienced patient who not only remained strong through his own physically demanding procedures but served as Katherin’s main support through her extensive treatments for her fused jaw. At just 11 years of age he functioned as her translator, explained her procedures and recovery, and reassured her to trust her doctors whenever she found herself feeling scared or confused in the hospital. Both Katherin and Cris returned home with improved physical function as well as a new lifelong friend.

Cris left the US with a second suitcase entirely filled with books. He hopes this information will lead him closer to his dream of becoming a doctor, a dream undoubtedly inspired by his experiences in the United States. Thank you to all of the doctors, medical professionals and his host family for making a lasting difference in his life.
