The Society on Sarcopenia, Cachexia and Wasting Disorders (SCWD) was founded in 2008 and is the first non-profit organization dedicated to the research and dissemination of scientific information on wasting disorders.

The Cachexia and Sarcopenia Epidemic

More than 5 million patients in the United States suffer from cachexia. Approximately 45% of the older U.S. population is affected by sarcopenia. Cachexia and sarcopenia are related to many diseases such as cancer, heart failure and frailty in the elderly.

Our Mission

The SCWD's mission to increase awareness among the medical community about sarcopenia, cachexia and wasting disorders as well as to educate healthcare providers through the Journal of Cachexia, Sarcopenia and Muscle (JCSM) and through the organization of multidisciplinary educational programs with the aim of improving patients' quality of life, hope and future. The SCWD also seeks to raise public awareness about the burden of these wasting disorders.

The SCWD relies solely upon educational grants and charitable donations in order to sustain continued research, development of educational programs and the redaction and distribution of it's journal, JCSM. The need for your support is growing rapidly and we invite you to join in the effort of raising awareness among the medical community and general public through research and education by lending your support.
